Frequently asked questions

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN each investment option?

WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY BIRTH STORY?

What exactly does going on call mean for my birth story?

WHAT IF MY LABOR IS REALLY LONG?

WHAT IF I HAVE A C-SECTION?

CAN YOU only photograph in a hospital?

WHAT IF BABY ARRIVES BEFORE YOU GET THERE?

HOW INVOLVED ARE YOU DURING THE BIRTH?

HOW MANY PHOTOS WILL WE RECEIVE?

The easiest way to choose is to think about which part of your baby’s arrival you want documented.

FULL BIRTH STORY
Best if you want the birth itself documented. I join you during established labor and stay through delivery and the first hours after baby arrives. This is the option for families who want the most complete story, from anticipation to meeting your baby.

FIRST HOURS
Best if you want the brand-new moments immediately after birth, but do not want labor or delivery photographed. I come after baby has arrived to document those first feedings, introductions, reactions, tiny details, and your first hours together.

FRESH FORTY-EIGHT
Best if you want those very early newborn moments without needing me there immediately after birth. We schedule a shorter documentary session during baby’s first couple of days, once you’ve had a little time to settle in.

In short:
Full Birth Story = the birth itself
First Hours = immediately after birth
Fresh Forty-Eight = the first couple of days after birth

The earlier, the better. I only take a limited number of birth clients around the same due-date window so I can protect the availability each family needs.

Booking during pregnancy gives us plenty of time to plan, talk through your birth preferences, and get comfortable with each other before baby arrives. For a Full Birth Story, I go on call beginning at 38 weeks.

Already close to your due date or baby surprised you early? Reach out anyway. Last-minute Birth Story, First Hours, and Fresh Forty-Eight coverage may be available depending on my schedule.

Going on call means I keep my schedule flexible and stay ready for your birth as your due date gets close.

For Full Birth Story clients, I go on call beginning at 38 weeks. From that point on, I ask that you keep me updated with any signs that labor may be starting, changes from your provider, inductions, scheduled procedures, or anything else that could affect timing.

Once labor is established and it looks like it is time for me to come, I make my way to you and begin documenting your story.

Because birth is unpredictable, being on call does not mean I am sitting by the phone doing nothing for weeks. It means I intentionally protect enough flexibility in my calendar so I can respond when your birth begins.

Birth does not follow a set timeline, so Full Birth Story coverage is not treated like a traditional hourly session.

If labor is especially long or slows down for an extended period, I may step away during quieter stretches and return as things begin progressing again. We’ll stay in communication throughout so I can preserve my energy and coverage for the moments you hired me to document most.

The goal is not to photograph every single minute of labor. It is to tell the full story of your birth without making you feel like you are watching a clock.

A C-section can still be fully documented as part of your birth story.

What I’m able to photograph inside the operating room depends on the hospital, your provider, and the policies in place that day, so I can never guarantee OR access. If photography is allowed, I’ll document as much of the experience as I’m permitted to.

If I’m not allowed in the operating room, I can still photograph the moments before surgery and begin again as soon as access is allowed afterward, including meeting baby, first feedings, family introductions, and those first hours together.

The way your baby arrives may change the logistics, but it does not make the story any less worth documenting.

No. Birth Stories can take place in hospitals, birth centers, or at home.

The biggest difference is that each setting has its own rules about photography, access, and how many support people are allowed in the room. Hospitals and birth centers may have specific policies I need to work around, while home births usually allow more flexibility.

We’ll talk through where you’re planning to give birth ahead of time so I know what to expect and you know whether anything needs to be confirmed with your provider or facility.

Sometimes babies move faster than anyone expects. Staying in communication as labor progresses gives me the best chance of arriving before delivery, but no birth photographer can guarantee being present for the exact moment baby arrives.

If your baby is born before I get there, I’ll come as quickly as I safely can and begin documenting from the moment I arrive. There is still so much of the story happening afterward, including first feedings, introductions, reactions, tiny details, and those first hours together.

A fast arrival may change where the story begins, but it does not mean there is nothing left to document.

I’m there to document, not direct the room.

I’ll stay aware of what’s happening, work around your care team, and step in as little as possible so you can stay focused on your birth. I may quietly adjust where I’m standing or move around the room to capture different parts of the story, but I won’t interrupt care or ask you to recreate moments.

The goal is for your photos to feel like your birth actually felt, with the real reactions, connections, and little details that happened naturally.

You’ll receive a complete, carefully curated gallery of the strongest images from your experience. I don’t limit your gallery to a preset number of photographs, and I don’t hold back finished images so you have to purchase more afterward.

The final gallery size naturally varies depending on the length of coverage, the environment, the pace of the day, and what genuinely unfolds in front of the camera. Even two experiences with the same amount of coverage can unfold completely differently.

Rather than photographing or editing toward an arbitrary number, I focus on telling your story as it actually happened. If an image adds to your story and meets my quality standards, you’ll receive it. My goal is to give you a gallery that feels complete, not leave you wondering where the rest of your photographs are.
